PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Tuesday asked two village panchayats- St Lawrence (Agasaim) and Batim panchayats to deposit Rs 5 lakh each for not complying with the earlier directives regarding the establishing Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for garbage management as mandated by law and subsequent contempt notices.
The court also asked Sarpanchas and Panchayat Secretaries of both the village panchayats to remain present before the Court on Wednesday.
The High Court had earlier reprimanded the two village panchayats for the same and both had assured that their MRF will be operational by February this year. Later both the panchayats were issued contempt notices.
During the hearing of suo motu petition, the counsel for the Aagcaim panchayat agreed to deposit the money in two instalments while, Batim sarpanch and panchayat secretary have been asked to remain present in person on Wednesday.
