Curtorim Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco has criticized ASI for neglecting the Basilica. “The ASI’s maintenance work according to the Rector goes at a snail pace. The failure to undertake repairs on time and the absence of proper and necessary facilities gives a clear indication that the Basilica has not been a priority for the ASI. The roof repair work, which began in January, has been neglected, and it appears it has been deliberately ignored with the sole intention to destroy the ancient monument. The keeper and protectors of the heritage sites are the very ones who show no concern or angst towards the safety of the monument” alleged Reginaldo. He added, that the mausoleum, which contains the sacred relic of St Francis Xavier, is collecting dust due to the sheer neglect of ASI over the years and if not attended with urgency, it will fall apart within a few years. Cortalim BJP MLA Alina Saldanha requested the CM to ensure that ASI takes up the maintenance work of the Basilica, on a war footing so as to ensure its completion before the monsoons. She mentioned that the anti-termite treatment is necessary which, if not taken up before the start of the monsoons, could be the cause of destruction of the world famous heritage monument and expressed concern about the wooden structures at the centuries-old-archeological treasure, such as images, altars, floors etc. “It is imperative that ASI stays focused in maintaining and safeguarding the archaeological structures within the Goa, and utmost care is taken through timely inspections and remedial works to ensure their protection and safeguard these for posterity,”she added.
