PANJIM: From the next academic year, post- graduate studies in the Goa Medical College (GMC) will have reservation for the minority community. An order by the Public Health Department states that the government will implement reservation for SC, ST and OBC at the post graduate level in GMC, starting from the 2021-22 academic year.
The decision comes three months after Tribal Minister Govind Gaude along with State Advisor of All India Aadivasi Employee Federation (Goa), Ramesh Tavadkar submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and Health Minister Vishwajit Rane requesting to implement reservation policy at PG level.

“Both had assured the association to implement the reservation policy from this academic year itself, as it is implemented in other States for last eight years. However, due to national lockdown, administrative process got delayed and meanwhile process for admission for this year (2020-21) already began. Hence implementation will be from next academic year,” the association spokesperson said.
With this decision, out of 61 PG medical seats of Goa State quota, seven seats will be reserved for ST candidates, 16 seats for OBC candidates and two seats for SC candidates.
“The association has hailed the decision stating, “We thank the government, Commission for SC/ST as well Commission for OBC for accepting long standing demand from doctors of these communities. This will provide opportunities for students from these communities to pursue higher studies in Goa itself,” it said.
