MAPUSA: Residents of Bairo Alto in Assagao have raised concern about felling of more than 70 fruit trees in survey number 176/60 spread across 2570 sqm area fearing it would be affecting the Biodiversity.
“It is a sorry to see that more than 70 fruit bearing trees are marked for cutting. When we saw this we were so disturbed that we wrote a heartfelt letter to the owner. We learnt from Forest Department that concerned person have applied for permission to cut all the trees. Becuase of few people who want to become rich, the ecology of Aasagao and whole Goa is completely being destroyed. It is sad because so many conservationists who come to see the birds, migrated hornbills nesting on these trees,” said a resident of Bairo Alto.

Villagers said cutting of so many trees at once would set a wrong precedence. “Phase after phase, trees are being cut and Assagao is getting finished so fast.I appeal to the Conservator of Forest and Ministry of Forest to take cognisance and save us,” said villagers.
People in the neighbourhood fear they would face water and drainage problems if any commercial project comes up after cutting the trees. “If any commercial project comes up, people around will face problem. Already several wells are polluted. Everything will be destroyed if we don’t take any action. People of Aasagao need to stand up to fight to save their neighbourhood.
