Mapusa: Three more accused involved in the gang fight which broke out at the Calangute market on late Tuesday night were arrested in the wee hours of Wednesday.
The accused, Suryakant Kambli alias Surya (53) resident of Shankerwaddi, Taleigao, Imran Bepari (30) resident of Ubo Dando, Santa Cruz and Suraj Shetye (45) resident of St Cruz were located at Pernem in the wee hours of Wednesday and taken into custody by a special police team of Calangute Police Station headed by PI Nolasco Raposo.
Police had arrested Tarzan Parsekar, a resident of Nagoa and an alleged history sheeter from the incident spot while the other three accused had fled after the incident.
According to police sources the incident was reported at around 9.40 pm at Naikawaddo, near the Calangute fish market. The police received a call informing that there was some disturbance witnessed in the Calangute-Tito area.
Acting on the information, a team of Calangute Police rushed to the spot.
Police have recovered a sword which was used by one of the accused in committing the crime. Police informed that earlier several criminal cases have been registered against all the four accused.
SP North Shobit Saxena said, “We will take Strict action. There is zero tolerance to this type of criminal elements who are disturbing peace. We will take strict legal action against them”.
“Tarzan Parsekar is a history sheeter and is currently on bail. He is involved in many offences and is a repeated offender. There are strict provisions under the law to deal with repeated offenders. We have consulted the PP and the PI and are going to take action and such things will not be tolerated again”, the SP said.
He said, it is not correct to call it a gang war as these are criminal elements. We are investigating objectively and only deeper investigation will reveal other aspects, he said.
The case is registered under Section 326 IPC and Arms Act. Further investigation and recovery of weapons is on going.
According to some locals the incident actually occurred at around 10pm when the group was initially seen interacting with each other in a lane near the market and later they came on the main road proceeding from Calangute beach to the circle where the fight started.
Meanwhile, the victim Swapnil Redkar who was attacked by the gang with a chopper said, “the four accused persons sprayed pepper spray in his eyes and assaulted him on his right leg thigh and right ankle with a chopper thereby causing bleeding injuries”.
He said, Parsekar was carrying a sword and the other accused Surya Kambli assaulted him with an iron rod while the third accused instigated the other accused to assault him.
Meanwhile, sources informed that the attackers even tried attacking a policeman who had reached the spot to confirm the information and seeing him alone the accused tried to attack him but however the PI along with team reached the spot.
