PANJIM: The States top 16 colleges will battle it out for the prestigious AC Fernandes memorial football tournament from September 19 to October 10, organized by the Herald Group to give Goa’s official sport a major boost.
Talented players will unite, irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
The tournament has been dedicated to the founder and chairman emeritus of Herald Group of Publications, Mr A C Fernandes, who was a firm believer of the welfare of the State’s independence of the media.
He was also a great patron of football and popularized the game through the pages of Herald.
The tournament is co-sponsored by Goa Tourism.
A total eight teams from each, North and South Goa have been selected.
The inaugural match will be played between Fr Agnel College, Pilar and Goa University Post Graduates, at St Cruz ground, 4 p.m.
Other teams in the North Goa group are Don Bosco College, Panjim; Dhempe College, Mira Mar; DMC College, Assagao; Government College, Sanquelim; St Xavier College, Mapusa and Caculo College, Mapusa.
The South Goa group matches will be played at Panchayat ground, Nagoa and will witness teams from Chowgule College, Borda, Margao; Don Bosco Engineering College, Fatorda; Rosary College, Navelim; Government College, Quepem; IAM, Nuvem; BITS Pilani, Vasco; PCCE, Verna and Damodar College, Margao.
