PANJIM: Congress party has come down heavily on the Narendra Modi-government over the steep hike in rail and freight fares, arguing that this will in turn escalate prices of essential commodities.
“The essential commodity movement is bound to increase. Onion prices have already sky-rocketed. This was always the agenda of the BJP,” Congress spokesman Jitendra Deshprabhu told Herald.
According to Centre’s decision on Thursday, rail passenger fares will increase by 14.2 per cent and freight rates by 6.5 per cent from June 25.  While onions are currently retailing at Rs 35 per kg, it is expected to jump to Rs 100 per kg by October this year.
Condemning the decision, Deshprabhu anticipates further hikes in every sector that will burden the common man. “People must realize, by changing the government they are getting what they deserved and not desired,” he added.
The issue is expected to be discussed at its committee meeting scheduled in the next few days.
