Outgoing council failed to fulfil ‘Model Margao’ promise: SCM

MARGAO: The Shadow Council for Margao (SCM) has alleged that the outgoing council has completed its 5-year tenure doing absolutely nothing for the town.

The SCM feels that the overwhelming mandate given by the people of Margao may have partially succeeded in taking “Fatorda Forward” but has miserably failed to fulfil the promise for “Model Margao”.

“In spite of crores of rupees of resources fleeced from the public as sanitation fees, Margao continues to reel under the garbage menace”, SCM convener Savio Coutinho alleged.

“It is now over a year since the segregated waste collection system has been introduced by the MMC. However, neither a kg of compost has been derived from the wet waste, nor the baling of the dry waste is effectively done, he charged.

“Machines provided by the waste management corporation were left to drench in the monsoons, and are now non-functional/damaged. If you go through the records, it will be found that approvals for the construction of baling sheds were granted by the DMA in 2019, but tenders for the sheds were wilfully delayed,” Coutinho claimed.

The SCM has expressed disappointment that even after the work orders were issued in June 2020, the works were not commenced immediately and the machines were left open in the rains.

“We demand that appropriate action be taken for this criminal negligence that has resulted in the damage of public property (baling machines) worth Rs 20 lakh,” SCM added.
