PANJIM: Goencho Avaaz convenor Capt Viriato Fernandes on Wednesday said that the people of Goa will teach a lesson to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for deliberately delaying filing of review petition over mining ban in the Supreme Court.
Capt Fernandes said that the Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the review petition filed by the Goa government because it was filed 600 days after the judgment. This shows that the government had no intention to seek verdict in its favour and made the mining dependents to suffer.
Capt Fernandes pointed out that the BJP came back to power in 2012 by alleging mining scam to the tune of Rs 35,000 crore. He said that till date the government had not been able to recover the loot of illegal mining and demanded that the government should recover the monies and provide monetary help to those whose livelihood has been affected due to closure of mining operations.
Capt Fernandes also demanded to know why the government delayed formation of the Goa Mining Development Corporation. “If the government had clean intentions then it would have not delayed filing of review petition in the Supreme Court”, he said.
Fernandes alleged that the govt deliberately delayed the review petition and was looking for a favourable decision to woo the people ahead of the Assembly elections.
