The chief officer’s rationale was that not increasing the sopo would severely impact Municipality treasury.
However, Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello, who is at loggerheads with the chief officer, along with the council have, reportedly, rejected the suggestion of the chief officer.
Margao being the commercial capital of Goa has the lowest rates of sopo as compared to other towns and cities.
Meanwhile, Rebello and Naveen are once again at loggerheads – this time over pre-monsoon works.
Rebello has accused Naveen of taking up pre-monsoon works bypassing the councillors. The chairperson complained that the chief officer has deputed all the labourers available with the council for pre-monsoon works, leaving none for miscellaneous works.
However, the chief officer countered the accusations saying: “The monsoons won’t wait for the councillors to hold a meeting, decide on a plan.” It’s the responsibility of the administration to complete the pre monsoon works in the town, he added.
