MARGAO, FEB 27
The gram sabha of Cavelossim Village Panchayat on Sunday opposed the land acquisition proposal of the Fisheries Department for the proposed construction of ship building, docking and repairs of boats at Mobor.
Sarpanch Edwin Cardozo said the proposal to acquired 17800 square metres for the proposed ship building project has been unanimously opposed by the villagers.
He said the land acquisition proposal earlier had come in for strong opposition from the Panchayat body on grounds that it would open the gates for migrant labour and create nuisance and health hazard for the locals. “The locals were particularly worried about the sanitary problems created by the migrant labourers in the village”, he added.
In another resolution, the gram sabha has opposed issuance of construction license for mega housing projects, including commercial projects in view of the discharge of sewage waste in the River Sal and other water bodies.
Gram sabha members’ call for a stop to issuance of construction license for major projects unless a sewage scheme is put in place in the village.
In another development, the gram sabha members demanded that the government implement the water tank distribution scheme through the Panchayat body.
Members cried foul over the distribution of the water tanks in the village, adding that justice would be done to the needy and deserving people only if the scheme is implemented through the Panchayat.
On the question of holding events in the village, the Sarpanch pointed out that the gram sabha has demanded that the organizers take due cognizance of the Coastal Zone Regulations and also install CCTVs at the venue during the programs. It was pointed out that the organizers should not use metal items in CRZ areas while erecting the pandals.
