PANJIM: Goa University is not a central varsity so it does not come under the decision to fly the National flag on its campus. But the University is open to do so if it is asked to.
“We generally wait till we get a formal letter from the concerned agency (UGC, MHRD, etc) before implementing. This allows us to study a formal communication before acting. We will do the same in this case too,” Vice Chancellor Dr Satish Shetye told Herald, when asked whether GU will also fly the tricolour.
The resolution to fly the flag at Central universities was taken at a conference of all Central universities and announced by Union Minister for Human Resources Development Smriti Irani.
It was among the 12 resolutions passed by VCs at the meeting on Thursday, which was held against the backdrop of a raging controversy over anti-India slogans allegedly raised at an event of students on JNU campus on February 9.
GU Registrar V P Kamat also shared Dr Shetye’s opinion stating, “If it comes in the form of a directive, we have to implement it.”
Asked whether the varsity would hoist the flag although it is not included in the present order, the GU official said that the issue has not been discussed as of now.
