Lex Infinitum 2016 is an initiative by two institutions, V M Salgaocar College of Law, Miramar and World Mediation Competition (WMO), Berlin, Germany both dedicated to propagating mediation to the grassroots of the society, to spread awareness about alternative ways of dispute resolution among members of the Goan society.
“Court cases get dragged on for years and many a times, these can be solved through a simple mediation session. The event will bring together the best in the business for a 4-day International competition in our own campus,” said Dr MRK Prasad, principal, VMSCL, Miramar.
The VMSCL-WMO International Dispute Resolution Competition will take place from March 2 to 5, 2016. “Lex Infinitum 2016 is not just about the competition but a determined effort to let people know that they have other options to resolve conflicts besides storming the court rooms. Workshops, panel discussions, talk shows, socials, lectures and training programmes will be conducted. The concept has drawn mediation experts from different parts of the world and participating teams from Poland and Afghanistan, besides 17 other spirited colleges from India. The participating team that is able to keep up its competitive spirit in a fun environment like Goa will walk away with the best memories from Lex Infinitum,” said Jonathan Rodrigues, president of the organizing committee and the WMO Continental Advisor for Asia.
Dr B S Patil, the director of the event, emphasized the role of alternative ways of dispute resolution available and how the ADR board in the college was taking giant strides at learning, mastering and preaching the concept of mediation. As a build-up to the event, there will be an evening dedicated to exploring the scope of mediation in India and abroad through ‘Mediation Musings’, which will be held at the International Centre Goa, Dona Paula, on March 1, 2016. A session on ‘Mediation in the business world’ will be held at 4.30pm, while a session on ‘Peacekeeping in Conflict’ will be held 6.30 at the same venue. Speakers from the US, UK, Canada, Austria, Ecuador, Kenya etc will discuss their experiences and brainstorm for renewed measures of propagating mediation in places that are completely ignorant of the concept.
