MAYEM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar inspected the Calvim-Carona bridge on Friday night to see for himself the final touches given to the bridge, ahead of its inauguration on Sunday.
Expressing satisfaction on the work done, Parrikar told reporters that this would be the 15th bridge constructed during his entire career as chief minister.
“All bridges were constructed within a very short period of time and seven more bridges will be constructed in the near future,” said Parrikar.
The demand for the Calvim-Carona bridge became vociferous especially after the Aldona bus tragedy on February 18, 2012, when a passenger bus drove past the Carona ferry wharf and went straight into the Mandovi River, killing four schoolgirls and two adults.
One of Parrikar’s first decisions, when his government came into power in March 2012, was the construction of the Calvim-Carona bridge.
Besides, Aldona MLA Glen Ticlo showed keen interest in the project on the very night he was elected as legislator and even visited the site the next day to enquire about the project.
Meanwhile, Parrikar will also lay the foundation stone for the Virdi–Amona Bridge on Sunday, in the presence of Deputy Speaker Anant Shet and MLA Dr Pramod Sawant at Sawalwada-Virdi.
“The 220-mtr-long bridge will be constructed at a cost of Rs 27.80 crore through the GSIDC within a period of 18 months,” said Sawant.
