Recently two or three months ago there was, and still is, a lot of hue and cry across Goa mostly from the “aam admi” due to the inflated electricity bills charges.
Most of the people consume electricity, without which practically nothing functions and more so in the kitchen. When the people asked, what are the reasons for such an exorbitant electricity bills, which has nearly doubled or tripled during the prevailing COVID-19 lockdown. The answer is given that the meter readers could not physically verify the units consumed by the consumers and hence the electricity bills looked inflated.

Considering the units consumed and calculated in accordance with the slabs shown on the reverse of the bills and adding the different miscellaneous charges such as the meter rent, electricity surcharge etc the final bill ordinarily corresponds to the said amount to be paid.
Routine monthly bills never raised alarms unless there was a hike in the power supply charges per unit or due to faulty meters. The commotion is due to COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and the bills were issued after a gap of more than two months which the consumers found exorbitant.
The “aam admi” used to pay monthly bills without any fuss but, the bi-monthly bill pinched them where it hurts. In order to lessen the burden on the common man it would be in the fitness of things for the Electricity Department to bring to the fore at this juncture the wastage of power in broad daylight when the shining star gives it for free.
Now who foots the bill for the unwanted wastage? Or is this also included in our bill to put more burden on the common man as miscellaneous expenditure? Let the Chief Electrical Engineer act tough on such wastage of power during the day, at the same time assuring that the street lights are on during the night or be indifferent and say “whose fathers what goes”.
