It was shocking to see the sorry state of the new link (which includes a bridge over the River Sal) from the Varca-Margao road at Pequeno, Pulvaddo to Navelim. There are gaping crater sized potholes on the road and the top layer has been washed away at many places even before inauguration.
This is how taxpayers’ money is being criminally squandered even as our Prime Minister has been exhorting us (a new taxpayer’s charter has just been announced) from every available platform to pay our dues honestly.

This is not a one-off case in Goa, defects in the prestigious Rs 546 crore Atal Setu have surfaced within one year of commencement of operations (and this was constructed by an infrastructure giant company).
Rampant corruption, cost overruns and inadequate technical supervision has been a recurring hallmark of civil engineering projects in the country, this even as we talk of smart cities and moving to ‘developed nation’ status. Monetary recovery, permanent blacklisting of guilty firms, jail terms for the contractors and the concerned government officials would act as an effective deterrent to such colossal National waste.
