Retaining wall at Margao gives way, locals demand immediate repairs

MARGAO: A retaining wall gave way along the water nullah near the Kudchadkar hospital, even as heavy downpour inundated many areas in Margao, including the station road.

As the retaining wall came crashing down at the Kudchadkar nullah in the Colmorod ward of Margao Municipal Council, local residents demanded that the authorities intervene immediately and repair the wall. They feared danger to the school students using the pathway and demanded immediate action under the disaster management.
Former MMC Chairperson Savio Coutinho said though an estimate was prepared in the past to build the wall, work could not get underway because of politics plaguing Margao city. He joined the residents in demanding immediate work to save further damage to the bandh.
Meanwhile, the Station road was inundated near Bata showroom on Monday following heavy rainfall for around an hour. Reports of water logging have also come in from other parts of the city with a number of cross drains still awaiting de-silting by the Civic body.
Margao fire brigade received five calls of tree fall in Salcete, including one at Cavelossim. Fire services said that one of the tree came crashing down on a house, while the other fell on the road, disrupting vehicular traffic.
