TIVIM: The Tivim Comunidade has objected strongly to the State government’s move to appoint OSDs for comunidades in the State, claiming that these appointments would be a disaster for the comunidade system.
“There appears to be some sinister design on the part of the government to appoint OSDs, as these OSDs will be empowered to override the decisions taken by the managing committee,” Tivim Comunidade President Peter Sequeira told Herald.
“As it is, there are frauds involving comunidade land everywhere and the government is not doing enough to protect this comunidade land. Appointing OSDs will only be another blow to the comunidade system,” stated Sequeira.
“The State government was boasting about the Comunidade Commission, but it has not been formed till date,” he said.
Antonio Fonseca, substitute attorney, opined that the government could have done well if it had appointed an Ombudsman to look into the illegalities by various managing committees and other officials involved in comunidade matters.
“There have been rampant illegalities at the Tivim Comunidade in the past, with some comunidade staff acting in connivance with staff in the administrator’s office. This needs to be investigated. Merely appointing an OSD will not really help, as all such illegalities may not come to the fore,” he informed.
“Comunidade land has always been used as a vote bank for politicians and unfortunately, no politician has come out openly to protect comunidade land. As a result, the comunidade system is being threatened by the government and the managing committees, who are prepared to loot their own land. All this has to be stopped,” Fonseca added.
