SANGUEM: The Kakumoddi-Santacruz Ward 2 residents of Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council have urged the authorities the education department in particular that the 80-year-old primary school building in the village be used for housing a gymkhana.
The residents led by Kristanand Pednekar informed that the building, which earlier housed a primary school, stands closed for the last fifteen years.
Pednekar said ever since its closure by the education department for want of students, the spacious building stands closed. The only time when the building is used is during Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. Though the building is old, the structure is strong and as such can be used for housing a gymkhana.
The residents particularly the youth are compelled to travel to Curchorem for gymkhana and other facilities.
However, if the unused building is used for housing the gymkhana then it will benefit the youth, Pednekar said.
Another villager Vitorino Barretto opined that the gymkhana can housed in the unused school building rather than keeping it closed and using the same only during election time.
Barretto informed that this school was once famous as most parents would send their wards to study. However, over the years and with the change in the education scenario, most parents prefer sending their children to the town schools and this led to the school closure for want of students 15 years ago.
As the building presently lies closed, the Education Department should have allocated the building for housing the gymkhana, which the villagers have been demanding since many months.
