MARGAO: The incident where two youth were allegedly kidnapped, tortured and humiliated has sent shock waves among the public as in recent times, in states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, members of the public have taken law in their own hands and brutally tortured and assaulted alleged suspect and accused, while the police has turned a blind eye to such crimes.
Superintendent of police, South, Vijai Singh has said that he was unaware that the two youth – Swapnil Assolnar of Sanvordem and a minor from Quepem, who were arrested by the Cuncolim police, were in fact kidnapped and subjected to torture and humiliation, striped and photographed and the pictures circulated on social media. He also said he was unaware that they were assaulted before being handed over to the police on May 22.
Though Cuncolim police arrested the duo, no action was taken against the assailants who were left free.
In the instant case, Auda Viegas of Bailancho Ekvot, who filed a complaint with Quepem police after viewing the clipping on social media stated that the incident was most shocking. She claimed that police ought to have taken suo-motto cognizance of the assault on the two youth when they were handed over to the at the Cuncolim police station. Viegas said that she has named Firoz Rheman Khan, Abdul Safi and one Nikil as accused in her complaint and said that she has demanded that police conduct an inquiry into the injuries sustained by the duo. Viegas further questioned what made Khan and his two accomplices Safi and Nikil to go to Quepem, kidnapped the two youth, take them to Rajbag (Cabo de Rama) and assault them, when the theft incident reported by Khan of Navelim took place on May 12. She demanded the immediate arrest of the accused persons.
