PONDA: A major tragedy was averted on the steep slope of Dhavali-Farmagudi road when a truck ran out of fuel and suddenly started moving in a reverse direction to fall on its side after hitting the dividers, on Tuesday.
According to the driver of ill-fated truck, the incident took place around 10 am, as he was proceeding towards Farmagudi from Dhavali and upon reaching at Farmagudi he realised the truck ran out of diesel. He parked his vehicle by the roadside and went to nearby fuel station and purchased diesel. After filling the fuel tank, the driver tried to start the engine and simultaneously started pumping out the air from the fuel tank. As the driver failed to start the engine, the truck started moving in a reverse direction on the downward slope. The brakes too failed to operate as the truck was in neutral gear.
Fearing danger, the driver shouted out and signalled the oncoming vehicles to stay at safe distance and jumped out of the truck cabin to save his life. The driverless truck after moving in reverse direction for about 50 metres hit the dividers and fell on its side.
Earlier, also a car driver behind the truck noticed the incident and alerted other vehicles to move towards safety and saved them from coming under the truck thereby averting a major tragedy.
Since past few months, this is the third accident of truck falling on its side at the same spot. This road has several sharp turns and is accident-prone, which needs caution while driving.
