RAIA: Vasco Veterans prevailed over Seraulim Veterans 6-5 via tie-breaker to enter the quarter-finals of 4th Rosary Parish 8-a-side Veterans Football Cup organised by Rosary Parish Veterans, at Laymati ground, Davorlim.
In a thrilling context, the teams kept the crowd on their toes. Seraulim Veterans scored two quick goals through Stevon and Sandip in the 15th and 20th minute of play to remain 2-0 lead at the half time.
Crossing over, Vasco Veterans entered the field with new ideas and techniques and attacked the Seraulim Veterans defence time and again to yield fruits by scoring in the 35th and 40th minute of play through the efforts of Jhon Fernandes and Uday Naik to level the score.
In the penalty shoot-out, Vasco Veterans netted through Uday Naik, Abu Shaik, Nelson and August, while for Seraulim Veterans, Kennedy, Steven and Sandip were on target.
Earlier, a hat-trick by Pele Fernandes helped, Pele Veterans, Benaulim, to thrash Navelim Veterans 5-0 to move into the quarter-finals.
Pele Veterans from the word go start attacking from both sides and scored the first goal through Pele in the 10th minute of play. Then Charlie D’Silva doubled the lead in the 20th minute of play for Pele Veterans, while Navelim Aluizio Fernandes’ shot from the box was saved by Pele Veterans goalkeeper Manoj Kesarkar.
At half time, Pele Veterans were leading 2-0.
In the second session of play, Navelim Veterans tried hard to come back but couldn’t make it. Pele Veterans scored three goals as Pele completed his hat-trick in the 35th and 40th minute of play and Luis Fernandes also added his name on the scorer’s list. The hero-of-the-match was Pele Fernandes.
In the inaugural match, Carmona Veterans edged past hosts Rosary Veterans 8-6 via tie-breaker to enter quarter-finals.
The match started on a slow pace and took time to settle. Rosary Veterans scored three goals in the 10th, 15th and 20th minute of play through Vincent Colaco, Mario Miranda and Remedios Colaco.
Rosary Veterans thwarted Carmona Veterans’ Neil D’Cruz and Charles Rodrigues attempts in the goal area.
Rosary Veterans were leading 3-0 at the breather.
Changing over, Carmona Veterans entered the field with renewed ideas and played end to end contest and kept Rosary defence busy. Carmona Veterans stuck the first goal through Neil in the 31st minute. Then Rosary Veterans made counter attack but their forwards Vincent Colaco missed chances to increase the lead. Soon, Carmona Veterans netted two quick goals in the 40th and 45th minute of play through Agnelo and Charles to settle for a 3-3 draw at the end of regulation time.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, Carmona Veterans netted through Yuri Ferrao, Denzil Ferrao, Raju Cardozo, Charles Rodrigues and Neil D’Cruz, while for Rosary Veterans Vincent Colaco, Piedade Colaco and Joaquim Colaco were on target.
Earlier the tournament was declared open by Fr Domnic Noronha, parish priest of Rosary Church, Davorlim, in the presence of Anthony Colaco, president of Rosary Veterans.
