Poriem constituency, established in 1989, was earlier a part of Sattari which was represented by Senior Rane, for tow terms. After the bifurcation of Sattari into Valpoi and Poriem in 1989, Pratapsingh Rane moved to Poriem and has been representing it till date.
Eight panchayats –Thane, Mauxi, Honda, Pissurle, Bhironda, Morle, Poriem and Keri –.fall in the jurisdiction of Poriem.
Poriem people are very upset for the last five years for the injustice meted out to them by the BJP government. Earlier during the Congress regime over 2,000 people got government jobs, but the BJP reportedly did not even provide 200 jobs.
The residents are also irked because the government failed to take measures to control the monkey fever disease which has been threatening the lives of people for the last two years. People from Sattari are reportedly angry over the government’s inaction in preventing the Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) diseases despite five people falling prey to it in Pali and Thane.
Another major issue in the constituency for the past five years is that government has not allotted proper development financial grants to the many panchayats. Because of this, rural development has been badly affected, say residents. Footpaths in villages, drainage systems are some of the pending issues left due to paucity of funds.
The present MLA Pratapsingh Rane claims that proposal regarding the various developments in the constituency is pending with the government for financial crisis to the past five years.
Pissurle and Honda are two important industrial sectors but people say the locals are not given priority for the jobs. Goa Auto Accessory limited (GAAL), a very old company in Honda Industrial Estate, is shut down by the existing government leaving 300 odd workers jobless. The new Helicopter Engines Rehauling Company also does not give priorithy to locals, say residents with the owners claiming that they require high tech engineers to work at their plant.
The Congress has come down heavily on the BJP claiming the government has chosen to close down the earlier company and has reportedly closed the doors for the locals who are not qualified for jobs in the new firm.
