CCP to meet PWD officials over construction of retaining walls

The Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) today decided to lead a delegation to the PWD regarding construction of nearly 20 retaining walls in a bid to strengthen various hill slopes where landslides are imminent next monsoon.
The matter came up at the regular meeting today when Rudresh Chodankar from the opposition group, pointed out to a major soil erosion at Mala along the Altinho hill slope which he stressed is likely to affect houses on the foothill.
He said last year, there was a minor landslide which had damaged a house and this year, he feared that if nothing is done, some lives could also be lost.
During the meeting, corporator from the ruling group, Avinash Bhonsle complained that the CCP was not taking up the matter of soil erosion of the Altinho hillslopes seriously despite he having taken up the issue at regular intervals.
A resolution was later moved that the CCP should now aggressively pursue the matter with the PWD so that some works could be taken up before the onset of monsoons.
Another member from the Opposition suggested that CCP must seriously think of taking up the project of strengthening the hillslopes under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM).
FOOD STREET: Regarding the proposal to set up Food Street in Panjim, members today refused to discuss the issue for lack of proper information. They even refused to go ahead with any formalities until the entire scheme is made clear and placed before the council.
The mayor Tony Rodrigues said that some of the affected gaddas which were in the news after the recent move to shift them out could be acccommadated in the Food Street. CCP is expecting to get R 5 cr from ministry of Food and Nutrition for the scheme.
The new scheme proposes to have food gaddas at one location on a daily basis for a specific time during.
Meanwhile, tomorrow, is the last date for the gaddas to move to the new market.
BARICADDING: The CCP is planning to set up barricades along Dayanand Bandodkar Marg to prevent pedestrians from crossing any where. Barricades will be put up from Institute Menezes Braganza upto Miramar.
Crossing of the road by pedestrians will be allowed only at Zebra Markings.
Meanwhile, corporators also complained that development works were not be carried out in their respective wards.
