“The mining companies too are responsible for the present mining scenario, as they carried out unsustainable mining. I feel that if the iron ore prices in the international markets had not gone up, the illegalities would have not been reported. Mining companies need to control their greed. The windfall profits too need to be taken care of,” Parrikar said at the inaugural of the two-day summit on Sustainable Mining organised by the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries (FIMI), Thursday morning.
Several big iron ore mining industry players along with other industrial stakeholders were present on the occasion.
Chief Minister said that the inter-generational equity in the mining sector can be assured by allowing inter-generational consumption. He said that the time has come when we need to control over-consumption rather than working out measures to preserve our resources for future consumption. “Mining basically started because we all started consuming ore. We first need to find out what is our requirement, and consume it accordingly. Reducing your need is the best way of inter-generational consumption,” he said.
Parrikar, the State Mines Minister said that sustainability cannot be seen only from the ecological angle and for a vibrant mining industry, sustainability has to be also seen from economic angle.
