CORTALIM: In an effort to rid Sancoale village of plastic waste,
the Sancoale panchayat on Saturday launched an ambitious drive to
collect plastic waste in the village.
The panchayat has fixed every Saturday with designated spots and
time to collect plastic waste. Sarpanch Ramakant Borkar, who was
present to launch the drive, appealed to the residents to
accumulate their plastic waste at the spots earmarked for the
purpose.
“It is time that the panchayat gets rid of these menace
permanently,” Borkar told Herald. He however warned that the
panchayat would take penal action against those found littering
waste in public and other places.
Meanwhile, Borkar also informed that he had taken up the issue
with the PWD minister, who had assured him to set up a sewerage
plant on priority basis.
In 2010 during the tenure of then Cortalim MLA Mauvin Godinho, a
survey was carried out and a feasibility report prepared for
setting up of a sewerage plant in Cortalim constituency.
“Due to the hard surface at Dabolim (MES College), Zorint and in
the slum areas of Zuari Nagar, sewage flows especially through the
road side drains and slopes, thereby polluting wells and paddy
fields,” Borkar said in his letter to the minister.
Borkar also informed that he had received assurances from the PWD
department to get public toilets (Sulabh Souchalaya) built in the
land leased out by Zuari Industries Limited and also to asphalt
roads near MES College.
