Youth challenge reservations in beach shack policy

PANJIM: Over two dozen youth have moved the High Court of Bombay at Goa challenging the reservation in shack allotment in the Beach Shack Policy 2019-22.
Thirty-one petitioners have challenged the reservation of 90 per cent for experienced beach shack operators, claiming the balance 10 per cent is injustice on the unemployed and freshers in the business. The manner in which allotment is done is arbitrary, they argued.
The petitioners have questioned as to why public beach space should not be auctioned for shack operations, rather than allotting through a lottery system.
During the hearing, the Traditional Shack Owners Association filed an intervention petition arguing they are an experienced lot in the business.
The court has adjourned the matter for further hearing on October 18.
