BENAULIM: Salgaocar Veterans squeezed past Marc Caterers, Nuvem 5-4 via the tie-breaker to enter the semi-finals of the 19th V M Salgaocar Memorial Veterans Soccer organised by the Prime Sports Club, at St. John the Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, on Sunday.
The match began on a dazzling note as Nuvem took the lead in the second minute when striker Francis Vodlo took a short pass from Seby Vaz who drilled a right foot shot past the baffled Bharat Morje in the Salgaocar goal.
Salgaocar Veterans responded quickly and equalised two minutes later through Anthony Pereira who latched onto a pass from Roque Pereira before avoiding a challenge off rival defender Milagres Fernandes to slot the ball past Salim Bepari.
Thereafter, the pace of the match went down gradually with no further goals.
After the change of ends, Nuvem wasted a golden opportunity when Seby Vaz ran past Robert Fernandes and Roque Carneiro on the counter attack and squared the ball to a completely unmarked Francis Vodlo who sent in a feeble shot straight into the hands of Bharat Morje.
In the tie-breaker, Salgaocar Veterans were successful through Climax Lawrence, Anthony Khambo, Pascoal Pereira and Robert Fernandes while Bobby Crasto, Seby Vaz and Francis Pachet scored for Nuvem.
