Two hospitalised after lightning hits tree, knocks them down

CANACONA: Two persons were hospitalised due to electrocution after lighting struck a mango tree in close proximity to the house they were in at Awali hamlet in Canacona.

Devidas Gaonkar from Subdale, Balli in Quepem taluka, had come to visit his uncle Shrikant were both sleeping in the house at Gaonkarwada in Khotigao village as it was raining when the incident occurred at around 5 pm on May 19.

Lightning struck the root of the tree and was transferred to the electric wiring in the house.

While one was flung about 2 meters away, the other fell unconscious due to the lightning strike and both were hospitalised at South Goa District Hospital, Margao and discharged after two days.

The electric meter along with all the wiring in the house was also damaged. Besides, an old abandoned house there split in the middle besides damaging a window.

 “This is the first time I am experiencing such an incident and we are truly lucky to survive this trauma,” said Shrikant adding that it was only the neighbours and family members who helped them in this time of crisis.
