MARGAO: Having spent Rs 11 lakh on transporting wet waste from the Sonsoddo dumpyard to the Saligao waste treatment plant, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) is set to allocate an additional Rs 18 lakh to ferry more garbage to Saligao, for the next 45 days.
MMC has recently issued a work order to the selected bidder to oversee the transportation of waste, with the hefty price-tag. Gaurish Sankhwalkar, MMC Chief Officer, informed reporters that the issuance of work orders followed a vehicle inspection process to prevent leachate from spilling on the roads during the transportation of wet waste, in accordance with the High Court’s directives.

Just days ago, O Heraldo reported the expenditure associated with transporting garbage from Margao to Saligao, due to the absence of proper waste treatment mechanism at the Sonsoddo dump site.
Even as the villagers and panchayat of Saligao have vehemently opposed the move, raising concerns about the massive garbage trucks spilling leachate and crowding their winding village roads, other detractors have questioned why Sonsoddo garbage cannot be remediated at the Cacora waste plant, which is not only closer, but also has the capacity to treat additional waste.
MMC sources revealed that three trucks have been enlisted to transport wet waste to the Saligao plant on a daily basis.
This initiative commenced on July 13, with each truck completing a single trip to Saligao, carrying an average of approximately 27 tonnes of waste. The cost for each trip amounts to Rs 11,800, making the total expense for the three trucks Rs 35,400 per day, totalling to a whopping Rs 10.62 lakh for a month.
