PONDA: Even as work on widening of the National Highway stretch near Maruti Temple opposite the Sun Inn Hotel at Ponda, is being carried out in full swing, the haphazard manner in which 40 to 50 two-wheelers are parked nearby is a matter of huge concern for the traffic flow.
The taxi operators at Sun Inn and the engineer supervising the NH work and the locals have demanded urgent action by the traffic department to clear the mess.
The barricades put up by the construction firms are removed arbitrarily by these two-wheeler riders who park their vehicles mindlessly on the little space that is available for traffic.
Throughout the day, these two-wheelers are parked creating immense trouble for the labourers who are engaged in the widening of the NH.
To add to the woes of pedestrians and others travelling by this route, the heavy machinery installed in this area makes the place all the more dangerous.
The Maruti Taxi Association president Baban Sawant said these bikers keep removing the “caution” notices/barricades put up by the constructing firms which make the area more vulnerable.
He said the administration must get stricter with these bikers and impose hefty fines so as to curb this menace.
“We had complained to the cops and the traffic department. It is high time they initiate action to avoid mishaps. The unplanned parking of two-wheelers is also affecting our business. On top of it, these bikers remove the barricades put up for safety,” said Rajat, an engineer involved in the construction work.
