PORVORIM: In a breakthrough, Mapusa police arrested Surendra Pol, one of the 11 suspects, in connection with the murder of Nigerian national at Lobowado-Parra last week.
Police nabbed Pol from his residence at Arpora late Wednesday night. Pol was absconding for the last five days, since the day the Nigerians went on rampage following the death of their fellow national, Obado Uzoma Simeon, mid-last week.
Police said that when they got the information that Pol would visit his residence on Wednesday night, they laid a trap and nabbed him.
Mapusa police kept Pol at the Anjuna police station till the next morning when he was produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class Mapusa for remand. He has been sent to 10 days police custody for interrogation.
Speaking to Herald, Mapusa Police Inspector Tushar Vernekar stated that they have not yet interrogated the suspect and hence they are unable to give further details.
“After completion of the interrogation, we are hopeful of getting more information from the suspect about his accomplices,” Vernekar said.
“Doctors at the Goa Medical College Hospital in Bambolim have refused to conduct the post-mortem of the Nigerian killed till his identity is established. Police are in the process of obtaining passport and other documents to establish the correct name of the deceased,” added Vernekar.
Police suspect that the murder has taken place due to gang rivalry. They had kept a watch on the residences of the suspects involved in the crime.
It may be recalled that the murder of a Nigerian sparked off violent clashes in Porvorim last week after a large number of Nigerians allegedly attacked policemen, damaged a police hearse van and blocked the national highway at Porvorim for nearly three hours.
