MARGAO: Opposition to the Mopa airport is slowly gaining momentum in Salcete taluka.
If the Goans for Dabolim Only has kicked off its campaign in the taluka by holding two meetings at Curtorim and Nuvem on Sunday, Colva villagers have rejected Goa government’s plans and the moves to construct the Mopa airport, saying the proposed airport would adversely affect the economic interests of the people of South Goa and eventually destroy tourism.
The issue was raised at the Sunday gram sabha when members demanded shifting of the Navy from Dabolim to the Seabird based in Karwar and ensure that Dabolim airport permanently remains a civilian airport.
In a resolution adopted at the meeting, members said the justification of having two airports advanced by the government are untenable and unsustainable for a small state like Goa and cited the classic case of the closure of the Bangalore old airport.
The meeting decided to hand over the resolution to the Chief Minister through MLA Caitu Silva, who was also requested to make his stand clear on Mopa airport.
Meanwhile, the meeting of Nuvem Civic and Consumer Forum on Sunday deliberated on the Dabolim airport issue. The Forum unanimously resolved in public interest to request Airport Authority to upgrade the needed infrastructure to the existing Dabolim civilian airport, stated Olencio Fernandes.
