PORVORIM: In a major drive against controversial scrap yards, Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday cleared 15 scrap yards that had encroached on government acquired land along the National Highway 17 at Karaswada-Mapusa.
The drive was undertaken on the orders of the deputy collector and in the presence of Bardez Mamlatdar Dasharath Gawas, MMC Chief Officer Raju Gawas, municipal engineers and strong police force.
Speaking to Herald, MMC Chairman Sandeep Falari informed that they had issued instructions to all the 27 illegal scrap yards (temporary structures) which had come up alongside the national highway near Peddem.
“Since they did not act, MMC undertook the demolition drive. The drive will continue on Tuesday and remaining 12 structures will be demolished. Several illegal scrap yards have come up on the both the sides of the National Highway 17 from Mapusa Tar junction to Colvale.”
“MMC has decided to demolish all the illegal scrap yards and the matter of 30 more scrap yards within its jurisdiction is sub judice,” said Falari.
According to sources, both the sides of the National Highway 17 from Tar Junction Mapusa to Colvale are occupied by the scrap yards.
Recently, four illegal scrap yards that had encroached on the National Highway 17 were demolished after an order was issued by the Bardez deputy collector.
