The reason was essentially because he cannot use the Indian style toilet owing to a knee-joint problem.
Alemao, whose three days extended police custody ends on Thursday, had submitted to the court that he be shifted to Colvale jail for medical reasons. He, however, had to spend the first four days of custodial interrogation, after his arrest on August 5, in the Panjim police lock-up.
“We had to shift him to CB lockup… He now seems relaxed here and is having food unlike the initial four days,” a reliable source said. Alemao had refused to eat food while in the Panjim police lock-up due to the filthy premises and for other hygiene reasons. Most importantly, the Indian style toilet was a problem. “He would be taken to officers’ toilet,” he said.
In the present lock-up, sources said he has also been given a bed on the first floor of the CB building where he is interrogated. “It is only for a brief period during the day that he is given the bed. After interrogation, he is sent back to the jail,” an official said justifying the situation.
It is learnt that another accused Satyakam Mohanty was brought to the CB lock-up for a day or so.
