MARGAO: The Margao police assisted by consumer activist group GoaCAN seized 40 duplicate LED bulbs worth nearly Rs 4000 which were being sold by unknown persons, on Friday. The raid was conducted following a tip off from consumers.
Surprisingly, the bulbs were being sold at the Power House in Aquem under the nose of senior power department officials. The incident has raised eyebrows all over the town as Goa has just hosted a major power conference and has also announced the launch of UJALA scheme under which the government plans to provide subsidised LED bulbs to consumers. The unknown persons were allowed to sell the bulbs at the electricity office of South Goa.
“We received information from consumers that some persons were selling LED bulbs at Rs 100 at the Power house. When I verified, the person fled the area,” GoaCAN convenor Roland Martins said.
“What we are deeply concerned is that how these bulbs are coming to the State. The people are confused as the Government has announced the scheme of giving LED bulbs to people at subsidised rate and these fraudulent persons are taking advantage of the scheme,” complained Roland Martins.
