Senior Ponda Cong member stakes claim for ticket

 PONDA: Ponda Block Congress Committee on Thursday demanded that in case Ponda MLA Ravi Naik decides not to contest as an independent candidate then the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) should consider senior party worker John Pereira as an aspirant candidate to contest from the Ponda Constituency. 

During the meeting Chaired by Arun Gudekar, Pereira, who is the general secretary of South Goa District Congress Committee, staked claim for the said post stating that he is an active member, contributed for the party and worked as the president of Ponda Block Congress for 11 years. He was also former sarpanch and three time panch member of Curti-Khandepar Panchayat and is the only senior most party worker after Naik.

He said, “We have already informed the GPCC that Ponda Block Committee will shortlist the names and sent to the committee for consideration for the Ponda seat.”

Shabbir Sheikh, who is the GPCC member said the situation arise recently when the news of Ponda Congress MLA declaring to contest as an independent candidate appeared in the local dailies.
