Salcete Deputy Collector inspects Margao fish market

MARGAO: Salcete Deputy Collector Ajit Panchwadekar on Thursday inspected the Margao wholesale fish market in connection with the recent criticism about the market’s bad condition.

Panchwadkar, along with South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) member secretary Vinod Kumar, took stock of the problems there and discussed the works that needed to be undertaken urgently.
Activist Savio Dias had petitioned the district collector regarding the unhygienic conditions, including stench emitting from the market. Based on the petition, the collector had initiated action against the SGPDA and the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), and directed the two to submit a compliance report by May 18.
While the SGPDA is in charge of the market, the MMC is tasked with collection of garbage from the market. Both failed to submit the compliance report. Dias stated that he had been advised to file a complaint under the Health Act to seek immediate public relief, especially to the residents living in the market’s vicinity.
