It may be recalled that the Karnataka government had reportedly dispatched a Karnataka police team to Baina on Tuesday to investigate the incident. The Karnataka police team, comprising a deputy superintendent of police, police inspector, police sub inspector and other police personnel, were seen enquiring with the locals and migrants about the demolition of huts. Two police jeeps from Karnataka were seen at the Baina site.
Speaking to Herald, Furtado said he was not aware of any Karnataka police team investigating the demolition of the huts at Baina. “No police official from Karnataka sought my permission or contacted me in this connection,” he said.
According to highly placed source in the South Goa Collector’s office, any police coming from some other state to conduct any investigation has to take permission from the government or the district collector concerned.
“The Karnataka police simply cannot come to Goa and conduct an investigation on their own, as it is illegal,” added the source.
“Even if a police team from another state wants to enter Goa or any other state for some investigation, regulations mandate that the visiting police concerned should keep their official jeep at the check post and travel in Goa on a state police vehicle, he said.
or else, they should seek a Goa police escort to enter Goa. They can only conduct an investigation with the help of the local police.”
“If such illegal investigations are allowed without the express permission of the government, then police teams from other states will follow suit and it will set a bad precedent in Goa. The government should take up this matter very seriously with their Karnataka counterparts and stop such illegal investigation by the Karnataka police,” said the source.
