CURCHOREM: The Quepem Municipal Council (QMC) has passed a resolution to ban ore transportation through Quepem town to prevent fatal accidents.
The resolution came at a meeting convened by the QMC on Friday to seek the views of the councillors and citizens regarding mining transportation through Quepem town, against the backdrop of the accident at Tilamol, where two women died on the spot after a mining truck collided into their vehicle.
All 10 councillors, including Chairperson Filu D’Costa, Quepem MLA Chandrakant Kavlekar, QMC Chief Officer Pramod Dessai and citizens were present for the meeting.
The citizens also demanded that transportation be resumed only after the completion of the mining bypass road.
According to D’Costa, after hearing the views of the councilors and citizens, the QMC decided to take pass a resolution banning ore transportation through Quepem town to avoid fatal accidents, like the one at Tilamol.
“All the councilors supported the resolution banning ore transportation to keep the citizens safe and as the town is already congested with a public garden in the main market, shops on both sides of the main road and civil traffic,” said D’Costa.
Kavlekar claimed that when he was the chairman of Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), the work of the mining bypass road was started after acquiring land from Taak to Shirvoi, but the same was stopped by the present government.
, thinking that the Congress would get the credit if it was completed.
“No doubt, the Congress will form the next government and the first preference will be given to the mining bypass,” said Kavlekar.
