BICHOLIM: Mayem villagers have strongly objected to dumping of mud in a local lake, as the same, they fear, would damage their fields.
Presently, the work of beautification of Mayem Lake is going on in full swing and as a part of which, the contractor who was awarded the job has been dumping mud into the lake.
“The contractor has dumped all the mud into the lake and that is causing problem. The lake water is used for irrigation and if mud and sludge is dumped in, it would flow into the fields,” said Ramakant Karbotkar, a farmer.
“There are many families that depend on agriculture for a living and Mayem Lake is the only source of water,” Karbotkar said.
“It is surprising that the contractor is dumping the mud into the lake and if this continues we would have to stop the work on the lake,” said Subhash Kinalkar, another local.
