ASSONORA: Goencho Avaaz co-convenor Swapnesh Sherlekar has submitted a written complaint to the Bardez Mamlatdar Laxmikant Kuttikar requesting him and the Disaster Management Team to inspect the hotel project site at Moitem, Assonora.
In the letter, he has requested the authorities to accordingly report the ground reality along with the necessary recommendations to the government.
Following the flooding incident at Moitem, Assonora due to the rise in the water levels on July 6, it is alleged that the construction debris from the site of this upcoming hotel project was washed away into the Assonora River. This incident was reported and a complaint via telephone was made regarding the same by Goencho Avaaz co-convenor.
The concerned authorities rushed to the site and managed to get the rising water level under control but failed inspect the project site despite requests from the complainant via phone as well as the people of Assonora during Bardez Mamlatdar’s visit that day.
Hence, Goencho Avaaz decided to file a written complaint regarding the project, which is under construction in Survey Nos 7 & 6 of Moitem village and is located adjacent to the Assonora River and upstream to the 92 MLD water treatment plant.
The water from this river is fed to the entire Bardez taluka and even a single incident of water contamination or pollution caused to this river will impact the people of this taluka, Sherlekar warned.
Goencho Avaaz has requested the Bardez Mamlatdar and the disaster management team to inspect the said project specifically in the worst case scenario wherein the river water is at its highest level.
“On July 6, the flooding that took place just within few hours of heavy downpour proves that there is no setback maintained between the Assonora river and this construction site. The rise in the river water levels up to the buildings in this project will be a regular scenario every monsoon and the pollutants from here will eventually find their way into the river,” Swapnesh warned.
“This project is a potential threat to the people of Bardez and Bicholim talukas. We have requested the Disaster Management Team to highlight the danger this project poses. If permitted, we have also volunteered to accompany the authorities deputed to inspect this site,” he added.
