Curtorim Police, locals squabble over a disputed land in Raia

MARGAO: A tense situation was witnessed on Tuesday over the issue of work carried out for the new Maina-Curtorim police station project at Saint Xavier ward of Raia in an allegedly disputed area. Few citizens reached the sight and pointed out that the court verdict is still pending over the land dispute where the project work was in progress without any signboard about the project.

Flying squad of Town and Country Planning Authority, and local MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco rushed to the site and defused the situation. Raia sarpanch Minguelina D’ Souza and Panchayat Secretary Prabhakar Kamti also joined him.

One JCB was noticed on Tuesday morning at the site cleaning and levelling the hilly area in the presence of police personals. Few citizens including the Diogo Cardozo rushed to the site and objected to the work, claiming that the case pertaining to the land is still pending in the court.  

Upon the hearing of the incident Shivram Vaigankar, Police Inspector of Maina-Curtorim police station rushed to the site. Nearly 20 police personal were seen in order to avoid law and order problems. 

Cardozo claimed that his case of tenancy pertaining to the said land is pending in the court since 2006. “They failed to provide the documents of the land when asked,” said Cardozo.

PI Vaigankar said, “Recently the concerned department has issued work orders pertaining to build the compound wall and cleaning the area.”
