MARGAO: Residents of Borda are tired of the frequent power cuts in their area. The commercial establishments and the residents of this area are angry with the failed promises of the electricity department.
According to the residents a month ago the electricity department had announced that there would be a shutdown once for the entire day. However, the people have been facing similar power cuts every Saturday which occasionally extends well into Monday afternoon.
The residents said they had food and perishable items stored in their refrigerators which had to be thrown out due to these shutdowns. Even commercial establishments that sell products like ice cream, fresh cream curd or other cold drinks get spoiled due to the long duration of power cuts.
Ruhi Phadte a resident from Borda said, “We work for the entire week and expect to take some rest on Saturday and Sunday. However, these are the very days when the department arranges for a shut down ruining the weekend of several people in the area. No one picks the landline of the electricity resulting in agitated people who then take to the station in a fit of anger. This has to stop and stop now.”
Laurel Abranches, a member of an NGO who has a shop in this circle said, “When we were promised that one month ago it would be the last shut down we were happy. But it is surprising it continues. The electricity department is charging more money to recover the FPPCA backlog. But are they providing giving good service?”
Some residents said that they called the Electricity Department Assistant Engineer for a resolution but he never answered the call. Later, the Executive Engineer who said he would resolve the matter did not revert with answer.
