Burglars loot two temples in Quepem

Burglars decamped with cash and gold and silver ornaments worth about Rs 18 lakh from Buthnath and Chandreshwar temples at Paroda-Quepem on Tuesday night.
According to police sources, the burglars entered the Chandreshwar Temple by removing the roof tiles and then opened the back door of the temple by removing the latch to make a way for other burglars, while in Buthnath Temple, the burglars entered the temple premises by breaking open the main door.
At the Chandreshwar Temple, burglars broke open two cupboards, a drawer of a table and two fund boxes with a booty of about Rs 7,000 cash, two rupdi (face cover) of Lord Chandreshwar (one each gold and silver) and a silver rupdem of Devi Mahalaximi.
Burglars then decamped with two rupdi (one each gold and silver) at the Buthnath Temple.
The burglars also decamped with other gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 17,93,000 from both the temples.
The incident came to light when the temple Pujari went to perform pooja at about 7.30 am on Wednesday. He immediately informed the committee members, who in turn informed the police.
The police immediately pressed the dog squad and finger print experts into service, but could not get any clue.
A strong police team led by Quepem DySP Rohidas Patre, Salcete DySP Umesh Gaonkar, Quepem PI Sagar Ekoskar, Curchorem PI Bhanudas Dessai, Quepem PSI Rahul Dhamsheker along with their respective police team reached at the site to keep a vigil in the area.
