Verna Sports Club take home Fr Basilio Cup

MARGAO: Verna Sports Club got the better of Maina Sports Club 4-3 to inscribe their name on the glittering 15th Basilio Andrade memorial inter-village football tournament organized by A.A De Majorda, at Musson ground, Majorda on Sunday.

Both the teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation period.
Verna held the upper hand in the opening session with their forwards and midfielders working in tandem to put the rival defence under tremendous pressure.  
Verna broke the deadlock in the 10th minute when Necessidade Moniz bulge the net. 
Down 0-1, Maina tried their best and created many forays into the rival penalty box but the rival defenders were strong in thwarting their attacks.
Post resumption, Verna Sports Club continued to dictate terms and enjoyed the better share of exchanges but could not increase their tally due to inept shooting by their forwards.
With the time running out and match drifting towards Verna, Tony Dias struck the most precious equalizer to put his team on equal terms.
In the ensuing penalty shoot out, Santan Rego, Basilo Rego and Christopher Abranches were on target for Verna Sports Club while Bruno Fernandes and Tony Dias found the mark for Maina Sports Club.
Verna Sports Club were richer by Rs 40, 000 while Maina Sports Club took home Rs 30,000.
The following individual prizes were awarded: Best midfielder Micky Cardozo (Maina), First scorer Necessidade Moniz, best goalkeeper John Afonso, best defender Stanley Pereira and Best forward Santan Rego, all of Verna Sports Club.
RDA Minister Mickky Pacheco was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guest of honour Benaulim MLA Caetano Silva, special guest Chairperson of South Goa Zilla Parishad Nelly Rodrigues and sarpanch and members of VP Majorda-Utorda and Calata.
