PANJIM: Following the 2012 defeat, Congress is making all possible attempts to revive its fortunes in Goa in the February 4 Assembly polls. AICC Vice-President Rahul Gandhi will address a public meeting in Mapusa on January 30 to galvanize voters.
AICC General Secretary and Goa desk in charge Digvijay Singh told media persons that the party has been able to win over the confidence of the electorate in Goa. “Party has managed to build its credibility. This was evident during the padyatra held by us covering nearly 35 constituencies in November-December, last year,” he said.
“More than 60 percent of our candidates are new. We have a combination of experienced and new faces and I am sure we will be able to get the mandate from the people of Goa this time,” Singh said. He claimed that the party will get a majority in the election.
AICC secretary Girish Chodankar said the party wants to give a clean government to Goa. “People discarded Congress in 2012 with the hope of some change but BJP proved them wrong,” he said.
Congress has fielded 37 candidates, including 22 new faces and four former Chief Ministers.
Meanwhile, Harayana Pradesh Congress President Ashok Tanvar promised to work for the people and also correct the mistakes of BJP. He was addressing a press meet in Margao, Saturday.
Avinash Tavares, Swati Kerkar and Pawan Khera of the All India Congress Committee were present at the press conference.
Tanver accused the BJP of looting Goa and finishing the agriculture and industries here. “The BJP had promised special status for Goa, but never fulfilled it. They also promised to get back the black money, but none of it happened,” he said.
