Ashok Pala, his wife Latta Bahen and son Bavik Pala, were arrested with 12 gold bars, each weighing 1 kg, the total value of which is estimated to be Rs 2.90 crore.
Customs Commissioner K Anpazhakan said that Ashok carried the consignment from Dubai to Mumbai via Air India flight 984 and later handed it over to his wife and son at Mumbai airport. The two domestic passengers hid the yellow metal in tailor-made medical waist bands as they boarded.
The trio was intercepted during the customs check, based on intelligence input, and were found carrying the yellow metal.
