MARGAO: It was Church on Tuesday and a game of futsal or footie on Wednesday. In less than 48 hours, FC Goa coach Zico, pretty much traversed the entire Goan experience stopping just short of eating fish curry and rice, some good cashew feni and a long siesta. But sleep was far from his mind when he took the “field’ to play futsal (a derivative of the traditional soccer game), with some surprisingly hard working politicians, including the portly Caitu Silva, who sprinted and dribbled to show how fleet footed he is. His ‘Politicos” team could not win but did themselves proud losing 7-9 to the FC Goa team led by legend Zico.
Zico scored the last goal of the match and led his FC Goa team to victory at Chowgule Ground on Wednesday. Ashley Furtado, the futsal coach at Chowgule College was the top scorer with three goals and he saved the blushes for the Politicos. Vikram Salgaocar, son of FC Goa co-owner Dattaraj Salgaocar scored two goals for FC Goa.
With four near misses within 10 minutes of play, Benaulim MLA Caetano (Caitu) Silva was seen sprinting across the ground and managed to score a goal for his team. Velim MLA Benjamin Silva scored another in the second half.
Fisheries Minister and Navelim MLA Avertano Furtado in the goal, had Panjim MLA Siddharth Kunkolienkar, Schubert Furtado, Caetano Silva, Benjamin Silva and Ashley Furtado in his team.
“Playing with the person who was a legend when we were young is the best feeling a football fan can get. I am high on that,” said Caitu.
“Playing with an international player who has toured the world in his football career is a wonderful feeling,” Benjamin told Herald.
Zico will be travelling to Mumbai on Thursday for the ISL players’
auction.
