SANGUEM: Sanguem town plunges into total darkness after Sunset.
A little after 8 pm when once most of the shops in the town area are closed, it is total darkness all around the town. Thanks to the negligent attitude of the electricity department that fails to pay any heed to the numerous requests made by the Sanguem Municipal Chairman Romualdo Fernandes and other councillors to replace the non-functioning streetlights in the town area.
The problem of non-functioning of the street lights is compounded all the more as the two high mast lamps installed in the town area have also stopped functioning long time ago.
It is pertinent to note that last month, all the ten councillors of Sanguem Municipal Council led by Chairman Fernandes had met the Assistant Engineer Electricity Department and appraised him of the grave problems faced by the citizens from Sanguem on account of non-functioning of streetlights and the high mast lamps in Sanguem.
Chairman Fernandes informed that even after repeated requests the department failed in getting the streetlights repaired in some parts of the town area. The ward No 10 in particular is totally under darkness.
Incidentally, the people from Sanguem had at least expected the streetlights and the high mast lamps in the town area to function during the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, but to no avail.
Once the darkness sets in, it is only the lights put up by the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandals that light up the town area.
Fernandes informed that last time, the municipality had got the lights repaired at its own cost and some of the contractors’ bills are still to be paid.
As the council depends solely on the income generated from house tax and rent from municipality owned shops, it is not feasible to repair the lights every time at the cost of municipal coffers.
The electricity department has failed to provide any relief to the citizens from Sanguem from the darkness and this affected the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, claimed citizens.
